Monitoring Monsal

Our Chatsworth team has been working tirelessly to restore Monsal Dale’s woodlands. One of the key aspects of this project is tree planting, and we have successfully planted thousands of trees to date. However, in order to track the changes effectively, we need your help.

To aid in our monitoring efforts, we have established six fixed photography points within Monsal Dale. These points have been strategically placed to create a circular route, allowing visitors to experience the natural beauty of the dale. By visiting these points, you can contribute to the ongoing assessment of the restoration work.

Use the map provided below to navigate to all six photo points, or feel free to take your own route. Each photography point is circled in black.

The monitoring of Monsal Dale is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, we aim to assess the impact of the restoration work on the areas of woodlands we have worked on. By comparing photographs taken before and after the restoration, we can evaluate the success and sustainability of our interventions.

In addition to monitoring the woodlands, we are also interested in tracking the changes in the surrounding areas and the landscape as a whole. Ash dieback, a fungal disease that affects ash trees, is prevalent in Monsal Dale and poses a significant threat to the overall ecosystem. By monitoring the spread of ash dieback, we can gain valuable insights into the resilience and adaptability of the dale’s flora and fauna.

Your contribution as an observer and photographer is invaluable in helping us achieve our goals. By visiting the fixed photography points, you can capture images of the dale from different perspectives and angles. These photographs can serve as valuable reference points over time, allowing us to track any changes that may occur.

We appreciate your dedication to supporting environmental conservation efforts and encourage you to visit the fixed photography points in Monsal Dale. By doing so, you not only contribute to our monitoring work but also help us showcase the beauty of this picturesque landscape.

So, what’s next? We’ve received hundreds of photos already and plan to use each one in our evaluation and monitoring work throughout the year. This includes creating time-lapse videos to show how the landscape changes over time. So, keep the photos coming! The more we receive, the better we can evaluate and assess our efforts.
