This year, the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration hosted its biennial international conference. The last week of August 2024 marked a pivotal gathering in Tartu, Estonia, where experts in ecological restoration science, practice, and policy united to shape the future of Europe’s natural landscapes.
As ecological restoration becomes increasingly critical in political and scientific spheres, SERE 2024 stands at the forefront of addressing biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation. With the EU’s Nature Restoration Law in motion, the conference was a key platform for setting bold, actionable goals for biodiversity recovery in Europe.
Tartu’s SERE 2024 promised to be a hub of innovation and collaboration, offering a rich exchange of ideas and experiences. Attendees from various fields delved into restoring diverse ecosystems, from wetlands to urban spaces, and discussed the integration of ecological restoration into national plans under the new EU legislation.
Our presentation focused on the innovative techniques we employ in our woodland restoration project within the ravines. We highlighted the importance of planting a diverse mix of species to enhance biodiversity and demonstrated successful case studies where our methods have led to site improvements. The session also covered the challenges faced and the adaptive strategies we developed to overcome them, offering valuable insights for similar projects across Europe.
